Fête de la Chanson 8: Semi-Final Allocation

Olá! As a result of reaching a new record of 35 participating countries (thank you again so much for your support!), semi-finals will be introduced for the first time during the eighth edition.

The Process

To begin, the 34 semi-finalists (the reigning winner, Shevek’s country of Brazil is automatically qualified to the final) were arranged into four pots, two with nine countries and two with eight. The pots were created by arranging each country alphabetically by the name of its Head of Delegation. Then the countries were marked off, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc., until each country had been given a number. The numbers created the pots. The results are as follows.

The unknown country in the third pot belongs to Callum and the unknown country in the fourth pot belongs to Rosalina.

After that, it was determined that the ninth country from the first pot would be allocated to the second half of the first semi-final, and that the ninth country from the second pot would be allocated to the second half of the second semi-final.

The Draw

The draw started with the first half of the first semi-final; one country from each of the four pots was randomly selected and placed in the half. This process was repeated for the other halves, until the two countries were left in the first two pots and were automatically allocated as had been determined earlier. The results of the draw are as follows:

The unknown country in the first half of the first semi-final belongs to Rosalina and the unknown country in the second half of the second semi-final belongs to Callum. Should Rosalina fail to send an entry, a country from the second half of the first semi-final will be randomly reallocated to the first half. The same will occur if Danny fails to send an entry for North Korea.

Each semi-final will have 10 qualifiers, which means that the grand final will have 21 countries in it.

The running order for these semi-finals will be a surprise, as it will not be revealed before the recaps are published! (I thought a little bit of suspense would be nice 😉 ). However, Brazil’s starting position in the final was determined today:

And that concludes tonight’s ceremonies from Manaus. The restart of Fête de la Chanson is closer than ever! See you again in three days for the official start of the eighth edition.

EDIT: Due to North Korea most likely failing to send an entry, Colombia has been redrawn into the first half of the first semi-final. Should North Korea send an entry in the end, Colombia will be returned to the second half.

EDIT [2]: North Korea ended up sending an entry.

EDIT [3]: As a result of expanding the final, Brazil’s starting position in the final was redrawn from a group of 21 instead of 19. The result of the former draw is below.

  1. @Dimitri
Is it Niclas or Tehoe holding the absolute record with the entry with the fewest views on YT ever to compete in ETSC or FdlC? 🙂

  2. As for the two semis :
Semi 1: 9 songs I will definitely vote, 3 are borderline and 3 will be left behind no matter what (out of 15. I can’t vote for NZ and N.Korea is still missing)
Semi 2 : The respective ratio there is 7/3/6…
Which means (in my opinion and only) that semi 1 is considerably of higher quality…
Another disadvantage of allocating songs in semis…

  3. And for the last time :
Nick will you please reconsider the 9 qualifiers thing? I think it will be appropriate to have as many as possible (if not all-I am not keen on the idea of leaving people out of the fun) qualifiers, so if we can’t dismiss the whole semis idea, please allow 10-12 qualifiers at least…You always considered 26 finalists maximum. I don’t understand why this time more people should be left behind… It spoils all the fun!
Maybe create few polls considering :
    a)The number of finalists (35, 25, 21 or 19)
b)The way people vote in semis (all 35, optional for the other semi, “rest of the world” idea)
c)what happens in case people fail to vote in any case

    • Done. My votes are ready to be sent when voting for both semis opens. I want to vote as soon as possible in order to have a fresh idea of the songs…(But I did listen to them several times)
It will be interesting to see if and how the Grand Final (which comes 10 days later and with a different line-up compared to semis) changes anything regarding my initial feelings for the songs! I suppose some songs could grow others could sound less exciting with time…
Let the show begin !!! 😀

  4. Shame about North Korea, would have loved to see what type of song they would bring to the table. Maybe next year they can send something like: “Little Kim” feat. Kanye West? 🙂 I’m so pleased with my country ending up in the 2nd half of SF2, especially when the standards in both Semifinals are high this year! Good luck to everyone, especially the HoD’s competing in SF1 as I’m predicting a bloodbath here (similar to last year’s SF2 in Eurovision)….
